The Themes of Attachment and Love in Jane Austen's Emma: A Critical Study

The present study aims at studying critically the themes of attachment and love in Jane Austen’s Emma. Jane Austen is the first important woman novelist who stands above both the classical and romantic movement. Moreover, through the fixed character in her novel, ''Emma'' Jane Austen treats various themes: attachment, love and marriage and thwarted love. The writer also uses them as a medium for criticizing her own society in general and the other societies in particular. Furthermore, married to a clever husband, Emma resembles an unsuccessful marriage based on sexual attraction. Finally, the paper ends with the conclusion that, love, or attachment- the word she preferred – had a precise and perhaps peculiar connotation for Jane Austen. Essentially, it expected the quality of affection that might be found between the members of a happy family. Young men and women who become honorably attached to one another were something more than siblings, something less than lovers.

A Critical Analysis of the Post-structuralist Thought with Reference to ‘the Death of the Author' by Roland Barthes

Roland Barthes in his famous essay “The Death of the Author” from a post-structuralist position took a stand against the notion of authority in a text. He while referring to the myth of Sarrasine in Balzac asks certain essential question regarding the position of authorship. For him the author only is a participant in the existing discourse of the time—a mere explorer of the existing symbols and pre-existing linguistic and literary systems. One the other hand he only narrates the events through the existing codes but never participates in it. It is here where Barthes connotes that the author might be praised for his mastery over the existing codes but not for his genius. Likewise, Barthes explores various concepts of post-enlightenment to give his concept of the death of the author not in a literary sense where the work is found importance rather than the author who is the product of the industrial strategy and his position changes over time according to the changes in society.

2019 Indonesia Presidential-Vice Presidential Debate in Corpus Linguistics Perspective

The present paper carries out a corpus linguistic analysis of the first debate of 2019 Indonesia presidential election. The study compared the speech of presidential candidate pair number 1, JW and MA, and number 2, PS and SSU, in the debate in terms of lexical diversity and linguistic features. The research employs a mixed-method research design by using two corpus technical analyses, i.e. type/token ratio and keywords. Results show that PS spoke the most, while MA spoke with the most varied vocabulary. The study also found that foreign words from Arabic in the keywords of JW, PS, and SSU are generally used to show their belief as well as to embrace the Indonesian Muslim communities. However, the Arabic words used by MA tend to show his identity as a Muslim cleric, reflecting his in-depth understanding of Islam. Unlike the Arabic word usage, foreign words from English are used more for a practical reason and to emphasize arguments, particularly by JW and PS. Additionally, the study reveals that from the lexical word-class distribution, JW tends to give more focused information and entities, while PS tends to offer more explanations to present information. All things considered, the present writers argue that corpus linguistics is an essential method to investigate actual patterns of language used by politicians to interpret further. All in all, the present research is supposed to give a methodological contribution to the study discussing the relation between language and politics.
