- Literary reading materials have an important role as an effort to build character and develop children's personality. However, not all literary reading materials can be read by children. Children's literature reading materials need to be adjusted based on the stage of intellectual development. This study aims to describe the characteristics of children's literary reading materials according to the stage of intellectual development and values contained in children's reading materials. This research is a qualitative-descriptive research type of library research. Based on the results of data analysis, it can be explained that literary reading materials according to the stage of children's intellectual development can be grouped into four stages, namely (1) the sensorimotor period (0-2 years) stage, which is children prefer sounds. and singing songs, (2) the pre-operational period (2-7 years) namely appropriate reading materials such as books dominated by pictures, (3) the concrete operational stage of the period (7-11 years) where appropriate reading materials are books narrative books or stories that can bring children to project themselves into time and place such as stories, adventures or traditional literature, (4) the formal operational stage of the period (11-12 years), namely the stage where children are able to understand double plot books or poetry-children's poems given at school. Reading children's literature not only provides entertainment or inner satisfaction, but in it there are character values that can be instilled in children. The character values are moral values, character, independence, hard work, tolerance, curiosity, discipline, concern, struggle and others that are inserted into children's literature reading materials.
