Abstract

A narrow-lugged wheel is needed to a hand tractor or a machine to be able to pass in between paddy plants rows without ruining paddy plants. The objective of this study is to analyze the design parameter, to simulate narrow-lugged wheel on wet soil (paddy field) to have the stress value on the finned wheels. A narrow-lugged wheel model with 42 cm wheel diameter and 7 cm fin width was tested on a soil bin apparatus filled with wet soil. The wheel was tested on variations of 30º, 40º and 45º fin angles, with variation of 7, 10.5, and 14 cm. Data validation was done by using the performance test result of narrowlugged wheel and the simulation of existing cage wheel. The best result on the 45º fin angle with 7×10.5 cm dimension can produce the maximum tractive efficiency (23.3%), 203.81 N with 3 active fin, and get a low stress value 0.07 MPa compared to the yield strength value 282 MPa.
