Using Ansys Maxwell to Simulate and Calculate Short Circuit Force Stress on Transformer Windings Image
Abstract

The short circuit in transformers creates large currents in transformer windings. The current increase causes electromagnetic force increase. It causes huge mechanical stress which can damage the transformer windings. This paper has used Asys Maxwell software, which is developed by finite element method (FEM), to simulate and calculate short circuit current, leakage field density, force stress on low voltage and high voltage windings of a 560kVA - 22/0.4kV three phase transformer in case of short circuit at the low voltage winding. The calculation results are compared with those of the analytical method to confirm the advantages of FEM. Using FEM can determine the exact position and value of the maximum force stress on high voltage and on low voltage windings which analytical methods cannot do This is necessary for the design, production, testing and use of transformers.
